Bah Humbug! I’m not feeling too good today and I’m not really up to joining in the Thanksgiving festivities, so I just wanted to say my thanks here instead.

Thanksgiving is an excellent holiday and I commend it to my fellow Brits. Although it started out as religious, it’s now a secular festival and thanks are directed at those who actually deserve it – our fellow creatures. It hasn’t been taken over by crass commercialism or by men in frocks, and the only requirement, apart from giving thanks for the good things in your life and remembering how lucky you are, is to stuff yourself stupid with Turkey. What could be better than that?

So thank you. Thanks to those who created me and taught me a sense of wonder, and to those with whom I shared my childhood. Thanks to those who have been and/or continue to be my companions, for their love and for allowing me to share their lives. Thanks to my only begotten son for valiantly continuing in the family tradition of disagreeing with everybody about everything. Thanks to my friends across the world for their support, and particularly to those who contribute to the discussions on this blog and help me better understand this beautiful universe.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I don’t know if you’ve already seen this, but it was on TV in the UK recently and fits vaguely into the theme of thanks (thanks to christopher hitchens for doing and saying what he has and does!):

Ah, great! Thanks Will. I saw the trailer for it but wasn’t sure I’d be able to see the whole thing over here. I thought Paxman looked genuinely respectful in the trailer. Something to watch over dinner – thanks!

And I agree completely with your sentiment. Hitch is quite a guy.

As a Brit, I rather like the de-facto secular holiday that Christmas has become. We have kept the tinsel and turkey and have all but forgotten about the bonkers religious stuff.
This is epitomised by Bart Simpson’s quote…

Aren’t we forgetting the true meaning of Christmas? You know, the birth of Santa.
